The premise

On a remote, windswept island community already struggling to survive, the unexpected arrival of a charismatic young priest ignites a spiritual awakening — one that feels, at first, like a genuine miracle. Riley Flynn, a troubled man returning home to face his past, watches as his tight-knit neighbors are transformed by a renewed and increasingly fervent devotion. But as unexplained events multiply and the congregation's zeal edges toward obsession, something ancient and deeply wrong begins to surface beneath the revival. Mike Flanagan's slow-burn masterwork uses its isolated setting and richly drawn characters to ask uncomfortable questions about faith, mortality, and the darkness that can hide inside belief.
