The premise

Kevin Costner delivers a chilling against-type performance as Earl Brooks, a respected Portland businessman hiding a murderous compulsion he can barely contain. His inner darkness takes the form of a persuasive alter ego — embodied on screen by William Hurt — who goads him toward killing even as he desperately tries to keep his comfortable life intact. A tenacious detective closes in from one direction while an unexpected witness complicates matters from another, tightening the noose around Brooks's carefully constructed double life. The result is a slick, character-driven thriller that gets under your skin by making its killer disturbingly easy to understand.
