His investigation takes on new urgency as a string of savage, inexplicable murders closes in on those closest to him. David Cronenberg crafts a visceral meditation on domestic rupture and psychological extremity, where the horrors of the mind find shockingly literal expression. Few horror films of its era weaponise family dysfunction quite so effectively — or so disturbingly.
